Walking shows to get you out and about in your local area

We all know that at the moment, going on our daily walks in our local area is our only means of getting out in the great outdoors. When you’ve exhausted your local walking trails, why not settle in front of the telly for a spot of virtual exploring! Our members suggested lots of great walking programmes to get you inspired:

Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad – ITV

One of our member’s top TV favourites is Bradley and Barney Walsh’s Breaking Dad. Previous series have seen them travelling throughout the United States in an RV, with Barney encouraging his reluctant dad Brad to try out new experiences and adventures. The latest series has them taking a tour throughout Europe. Episodes are available on ITV and ITV Hub.

Life of a Mountain – BBC4

BBC’s Life of a Mountain explores a year in the lives of the locals and visitors to some of the UK’s most famous peaks. Catch up on BBC iPlayer to see the lives of Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Blencathra in the Lake District.

Hadrian’s Wall with Robson Green – Channel 5

English actor Robson Green takes a journey along the ancient Hadrian’s Wall. Along the way, he treads in ancient footsteps, meeting local characters, visiting nearby landmarks and taking in the dramatic landscapes of the Northumbrian countryside.

Great Railway Journeys – BBC2

Armed with George Bradshaw’s 1840 railway guide, presenter Michael Portillo travels around the country by train exploring the ways that society and industry have changed since the guide was first published during the Victorian era. At each destination, Michael visits local landmarks, meets residents, enjoys local food, and tries his hand at local crafts and manufacture, and considers the legacy of the Industrial Revolution as he makes his way across the country.

Hairy Bikers’ Bakeation – BBC2

With almost a decade of episodes to catch up on this programme is synonymous with Travel TV, watch Dave Myers and Si King, otherwise known as ‘Hairy Bikers’, cook their way around Europe. Sharing secret family recipes with the locals, the Hairy Bikers try out recipes from simple bread to complex confections. The Hairy Bikers’ Bakeation offers a little bit of everything, part travel guide, cookery show and family food history.

Incredible Journeys with Simon Reeve – BBC2

Broadcaster and writer Simon Reeve presents some of the highlights of his incredible journeys around the world, offering something a bit different from your usual travel documentary series. During a career spanning more than fifteen years, Simon has visited over a hundred countries on six different continents, experiencing epic landscapes and uncovering moving and dramatic human stories.
